Northern Architects was appointed to design a bold, contemporary extension to a period semi-detached home on a tree-lined street in Sale. The project aimed to simplify the home’s layout and provide a modern kitchen and family space that connects seamlessly with the garden.

Replacing an outdated kitchen extension and conservatory, the new structure is defined by black charred timber cladding—chosen for its sculptural quality and ability to age beautifully over time. The asymmetric, vaulted ceiling creates a striking internal volume and enhances the sense of space and light.

Large patio doors open directly onto the garden, making the extension a true continuation of the living space. This project demonstrates Northern’s commitment to designing contemporary interventions that complement and elevate period homes in South Manchester.
